Boranup Campground
Boranup Drive, Boranup
300 km from Perth
Level: Medium (some amentities)
Ideal for a family forest experience.
Boranup Campground is set among the majestic Boranup Forest in the Leeuwin Naturalist National Park, just south of Margaret River.
The forest is home to tall and glorious Karri trees making it one of the most picturesque areas in the southwest.
The campground only has seven sites and there are no bookings, so it is best to get in early in the day.
The sites are surrounded by trees and an abundance of birdlife.
There are fire rings at every site and firewood provided (still best to take your own though – just in case).
Insider Info
There are lots of 4WD-only tracks in Boranup Forest that run off Boranup Drive that can be explored, but some can be quite challenging. Take it easy and be prepared to back out if it gets too much (retrieval gear recommended).
Don't forget your bathers, there are plenty of great beaches nearby!
Also, fire restrictions may be imposed at any time and without notice.
In the Area...
Boranup is a great place to explore the beaches of the Margaret River and Augusta area for swimming, fishing, surfing and sight-seeing. See a list of beaches to explore here.
There is an abundance of good surfing beaches, but if you are looking for something a little more sheltered for the little ones try Gnarabup Beach.
And if you want to watch some surfing, but aren’t up for taking on the waves yourself, Redgate Beach has great vantage points to see the action.
Safety
The kookaburras at the campground are not shy! Keep your food covered, and watch out for incoming air traffic.
Access
You access the Boranup Campground from Boranup Drive which is a loop dirt road that runs off Caves Road, and back to it again, between Margaret River and Augusta. The campground is close to second entry.
You can get there in a 2WD but there is some erosion at the campground exit, so be cautious.
